“If you want to make a social change in a developing country such as India, the best solution is to send girls to school and support their education until they graduate from junior school. “

n a rural area in India, some of the children are not sent to school due to poverty and the beliefs rooted in the area.
In the book “Development as Freedom” by a novel prizewinner Amartya Sen, he describes development as “the expansion of the real freedoms that the citizens enjoy to pursue the objectives they have reason to value.” He criticizes the modern development books that have `focused primarily on the generation of economic growth, in the sense of increasing gross national product. Although having more wealth may lead to the expansion of human capability by providing more opportunities, wealth is just an instrument to achieve the enhancement of freedom. Sen insists that it is freedom, not wealth, which should be maximized. The economic growth means the expansion of instrumental freedoms, which also include political freedom, economic facilities, social opportunities, transparency, and security. They all serve directly to enhance the capabilities of people; however, these freedoms also complement each other and are interconnected. Freedom is the primary end that constitutes development, as well as means of development, and is effective as an instrument to advance other forms of freedom. Thus, education is vital to enhance the individual capability, which leads to expansion of other instrumental freedom.

Also, education for women is essential in the process of development since women constitute half of the population of the country, but also they are the agency and “the dynamic promoter of social transformations that can alter the lives of both women and men”.  For instance, family planning has a direct relation with female education. It is evident from the facts; in 1991 Kerala which has the high overall literacy rate of 90.59 percent with the female literacy rate of 86.93 percent has the lowest birth rate, while Rajasthan’s low female literacy rate of 20.84 percent gives rise to the third highest birth rate in the country.  Hence, women are a key factor in the process of development.

Share Your Hearts recognizes how important education can be to every human being and we hope to encourage the children of India who are in school as well as bring awareness to the importance of education.
